Success in High School
"Success" is a term that can be defined differently by each student at Waubonsie, and our counseling team works to supports all students goals and aspirations. Through our years of experience, we have found that the ideas below are what make our students the most "successful" by the time they leave high school.

  1. Get involved: Being connected to a club or sport helps student to establish a social network, provides structure to their day, and provides them with valuable skills sets that will help them be successful in the classroom setting.

  2. Advocate for yourself: High school is about transitioning to into adulthood, which requires an increased level of independence. A student's best tool is their voice! Students should talk to their teachers, send their own emails to ask questions, and complete forms/documentation independently while using adults in their life as support personnel. A student is the best source of information to help the adults around them support their journey.

  3. Attend class physically and mentally: Being in class is vital to ensure that you are connected to the classroom culture and can stay on top of the curriculum that is being provided. You also need to be mentally present by limiting distractions so you can focus on the lesson for the day and be able to actively engage in the learning that is taking place in front of you.

  4. Try something new: High school is the last "low stakes" environment to do something different or take a calculated risk before entering a less forgiving environment. Take the fun class, join a new activity/sport, talk to new peers, and do something that may intimidate you! There are many lessons to be learned outside of the classroom that come from taking a chance and stepping out of the comfort zone.
